How Long Do Same Day Crowns Last?
Same day crowns, also known as CEREC crowns, are dental crowns made from ceramic.
In the past, patients had to make at least two trips to their dentist’s office when they needed to get a dental crown. The crowns were made at a dental laboratory then sent to the dentist. With CEREC crowns, patients no longer have to wait or come back for their crowns. Now they are made in the dentist’s office while they are there, saving them time and money.
How durable are same day crowns?
The convenience of getting fitted for a dental crown during a single trip to the dentist is one of the biggest draws of the same day crown. However, there are some people who do not mind waiting for the dental laboratory to make their dental crowns. The crowns that are made in the laboratory are more durable and usually last longer.
Now, this does not mean same day crowns are inferior to the crowns made in the laboratory because they are not. The main reason the laboratory crowns last longer than the same day crowns is because of the material that they are made from.
What is the difference between a same day crown and a crown made in the laboratory?
Dental crowns that are made in the laboratory are usually made from porcelain, which is a very durable material similar to the enamel of the teeth. On the other hand, same day crowns are made from ceramic, which is not as durable as porcelain.
Porcelain crowns have a lifespan of five to 15 years, while same day crowns have a lifespan of five years. However, the same day crown can last longer than five years if it is properly taken care of. Same day crowns also tend to fit more precisely than conventional crowns. That means the patient does not have to worry about going back to the dentist to get the crown refitted, which is something most people with conventional crowns have to worry about.
How do I take care of my same day crown?
Since proper care of the same day crown is important to its durability, it is crucial to know how to do so. Some of the best ways to take care of a same day crown include:
- Avoiding hot beverages and foods that have a lot of sugar because they increase the sensitivity of the crown
- Flossing around the crown to make sure it stays in place
- Protecting the crown from grinding by wearing a mouth guard to sleep
- Limiting the consumption of sticky foods, which can potentially shift or remove the same day crown
- Practicing good oral hygiene, which means brushing the teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly
- Scheduling routine dental cleanings at the dentist
Conclusion
Same day crowns are becoming more popular because they help to protect damaged teeth and do not require multiple trips to the dentist to get. If you are in need of a dental crown, ask your dentist about getting a same day crown.
